ANZAC Day in Hay
ANZAC Day is always a significant and deeply respected occasion in Hay. Our town and surrounding district recorded one of the highest enlistment rates of any small community in Australia during World War I. From a very small regional population, 641 men volunteered for active service — an extraordinary proportion of the eligible male population.
This immense commitment is the reason the community chose to build the Hay War Memorial High School as a functional, living monument. It ensures that every generation who walks through its doors is reminded daily of the scale of the town’s sacrifice.
On a national level, Australia endured a staggering 64.9% casualty rate during the Great War — one of the highest of any nation in the British Empire. Hay’s contribution to that history remains a powerful testament to the courage, loyalty, and resilience of our community.
ANZAC Day Activities
Dawn Service — 6.00am
The Dawn Service begins at 6.00am sharp at the Cenotaph in Lachlan Street. Following the service, the community will make a pilgrimage to the cemetery, where the Ode will be recited and wreaths laid at the Australian War Graves and Soldiers Memorial.
Gunfire Breakfast
After the Dawn Service and cemetery pilgrimage, a traditional Gunfire Breakfast will be served at the Hay Services Club. A small cost applies for breakfast.
ANZAC Day March — 10.00am
The ANZAC Day March steps off at 10.00am sharp from the Cenotaph in Lachlan Street. Participants are asked to begin forming up from 9.30am.
The March will travel along Lachlan St, Moppett St, and Pine St, pausing for wreath‑laying at the Boer War Memorial and Light Horse Memorial. It concludes at the Hay War Memorial High School / Spirit of ANZAC Centre for the Morning Service at 10.20am.
Two Up — Afternoon
After lunch, Two Up will be played in the auditorium at the Hay Services Club. This is the only venue in town where Two Up will be played on ANZAC Day.
